The United States and Mexico share vitally important security, energy, and economic interests that require extensive cooperation and trust to achieve success. Our two countries have a long history as neighbors, and we are deeply integrated on many critical security priorities. Violence in Mexico affects U. At the same time, U. Transnational criminal organizations also viciously compete for territory to supply surging U.
At least politicians in Mexico were also killed in the run-up to its elections in July. While Mexico has taken significant steps to address this spiraling security situation, corruption and impunity continue to challenge efforts.
I have spent a large part of my life advancing U. This relationship is equally significant to Mexicans. Both countries have a vested interest in strengthening our security efforts to combat criminal groups and their illicit activities that poison our populations. Even amidst challenges, Mexico has made substantial strides in addressing its security situation and professionalizing its defense and justice institutions. The United States rightly places a high priority on securing its borders, and its partnership with Mexico is essential to achieving U.
Mexico has been a transit country for many migrants from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras who have fled violence or lack of jobs. However, Mexico has worked to strengthen security on its southern border, and it has seized billions of dollars in illicit drugs and currency.
Recently, the U. Mexico is also a member of the Inter-American Defense Board, which plays a critical role in training militaries in the region, and this year, will host the Eighth Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas in October. The importance of border security after 9/11
Mexican officers participate in the U. Joint Taskforce-South JIATF-S to counter threat networks, and Mexico has provided significant humanitarian and disaster assistance to countries in the region and contributed military personnel for peacekeeping operations around the world.
Although we can improve our cooperation to combat corruption, modernize border technology and energy infrastructure, and better support human rights, in the days ahead, I believe the United States should do more to prioritize its security partnership with Mexico and together build on efforts that are achieving results.

Mitch McConnell is terrible. He rejected that," O'Malley Dillon said. Negotiations have been deadlocked since the summer, and Majority Leader McConnell said on Tuesday that the Senate would not recess for Christmas until a deal is reached.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo found out what happens when you send out invitations to an indoor holiday party during a pandemic that has killed at leastAmericans: not that many people show up. The Tuesday event for the families of diplomats in high-risk locations was hosted by Pompeo and his wife, Susan, in Washington, D.Any American who has turned on their TV or glanced at a newspaper over the past few days and weeks knows that border security and maintaining our national sovereignty has been at the top of the news.
This debate has raged on for years, for decades even. But as the matter at hand has become a crisis, the actions we take now are more important than ever. National security has always been, and continues to be, one of our nation's top priorities. Some may even argue national security is the highest duty a nation's leaders are meant to ensure and protect.
It is certainly one of the defining characteristics of any successful nation, and it is without question that national security would be impossible without border security. Our border security issue has reached crisis levels. In Fiscal Yearthere were overapprehensions at the U.
Claims of asylum are also up 2, percent in the last five years alone.Intern interior designer resume
InU. Citizenship and Immigration Services processed roughlycredible fear claims, setting an all-time high record, but that is not all. A dramatic spike in drugs at the southern border, rising numbers of gang members, criminals and known or suspected terrorists, as well as a rise in vulnerable populations, have all brought different threats and issues into our country. Not only is national public security and safety threatened, but also so is our defense against the dangerous drugs that continue to help fuel our country's opioid crisis.
I have always said our nation is a nation of compassion; however, we are also a nation of laws. Meaningful and complete immigration reform is impossible without a solution to our border security crisis. I hope we can all agree that Americans deserve better than our nation's current broken immigration system.
Simply put, this must become a priority, for the sake of us all. As government funding has been so closely tied to this issue over the past few months, I would like to reiterate that keeping the government open is a good thing. However, my friends on the Democratic side of the aisle continue to ignore their responsibility to secure our borders and keep the American people safe. It is no secret that their hatred for our president now drives the policy-making decisions of those on the left, no matter how beneficial the policies are for families across the country.
I support the president's usage of a national emergency to take the responsible actions to secure our border, which must remain the top priority. I believe the first step toward a solution is securing our border and fulfilling our duty to all Americans to provide a physically safe and economically prosperous country.
Effective border security will help keep out criminal activity, terrorists, contraband, drugs and other public safety threats. Additionally, it will allow us finally to start making real and effective immigration system reforms. As overcases sit in our country's immigration court, it is obvious we are not able to effectively and efficiently grant asylum to those who truly need it or take up cases that have waited their fair share of time to have a chance at legally entering. The time is now, and it starts with securing our borders.

More Articles to Read.Events in the Middle East seem to make some commentators and officials forget the fact that borders matter—everywhere, including the Middle East.
Most borders reflect the vagaries and irrationalities of history. Sometimes they look arbitrary—history does not usually produce straight lines. Borders frame states, and states are the constituents of the international system and order. Borders bound sovereignty. Their recognition implies acceptance of power within boundaries. For these reasons alone, governments and commentators should take them seriously and be wary of too-easy calls to change them. Just look at the Balkan bloodbaths of the last years for examples other than those in Iraq and Syria of what can happen when borders are torn up or control of borders becomes a politico-military issue.
In short, borders are at the heart of international peace, order, and prosperity. The successful attack on, and rearrangement of, borders should give every state pause. The corollary is the prohibition on the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. Neither of these core principles of our world depends on how the state came to be or how its borders were drawn.
Of course the borders of Iraq, Syria, and other states reflect arbitrary decisions and they may not be immutable. There is no universal norm for how one makes a state be a state. International community acceptance is decisive. So is process. Internationally acceptable process allowed for the emergence of Eritrea and South Sudan as new states in Africa despite the long-standing taboo on tampering with the arbitrary boundaries inherited from colonial days.
Taiwan possesses objective attributes of statehood—territory, people, government, and the ability to conduct foreign relations and implement international agreements—but few recognize it as an independent country. And mere recognition is not enough, as the Palestinian Authority has discovered. The process for establishing the Palestinian Authority as a state is diplomatic. Efforts to circumvent that process may succeed but success is not certain unlike those pursuant to a diplomatic process.
Economic and social viability is a practical test. Micro-states, although ethnically homogenous, may meet objective tests of statehood and fail to be other than basket-cases. Most borders that do not reflect geography do, even if the arbitrary decision is the result of war. Now we have the Islamic State claiming to be a new Caliphate and running roughshod over long-standing boundaries it does not like or wants to control. For too long, the policy debate over border enforcement has been split between those who believe the border can be sealed against illegal entry by force alone, and those who believe that any effort to do so is futile and without expanded legal work opportunities.
And for too long, both sides have been able to muster evidence to make their cases — the enforcers pointing to targeted successes at sealing the border, and the critics pointing to continued illegal entry despite the billions spent on enforcement. Until recently it has been hard to referee the disputes with any confidence because the data was simply inadequate — both sides could muster their preferred measures to make their case.
But improvements in both data and analysis are increasingly making it possible to offer answers to the critical question of the effectiveness of border enforcement in stopping and deterring illegal entry. The new evidence suggests that unauthorized migration across the southern border has plummeted, with successful illegal entries falling from roughly 1. The success of deterrence through enforcement has meant that attempted crossings have fallen dramatically even as the likelihood of a border crosser being apprehended by the Border Patrol has only risen slightly, to just over a chance.
These research advances should help to inform a more rational public debate over the incremental benefits of additional border enforcement expenditures. In particular, Congress should be taking a careful look at the incremental gains that might come from additional spending on border enforcement. The evidence suggests that deterrence through enforcement, despite its successes to date in reducing illegal entry across the border, is producing diminishing returns.
There are three primary reasons. First, arrivals at the border are increasingly made up of asylum seekers from Central America rather than traditional economic migrants from Mexico; this is a population that is both harder to deter because of the dangers they face at home, and in many cases not appropriate to deter because the United States has legal obligations to consider serious requests for asylum.
Second, the majority of additions to the US unauthorized population is now arriving on legal visas and then overstaying; enforcement at the southern border does nothing to respond to this challenge.
And finally, among Mexican migrants, a growing percentage of the repeat border crossers are parents with children left behind in the United States, a population that is far harder to deter than young economic migrants.
The administration could better inform this debate by releasing to scholars and the public the research it has sponsored in order to give Americans a fuller picture on border enforcement. Read More. This paper introduces a special collection of 15 articles that chart a course for long-term reform of the US immigration system. View Publication. US immigration removal procedures need reform, and systematic flaws in the removal adjudication system must be addressed.
The Department of Homeland Security DHS uses every tool in its arsenal to expeditiously remove people from the United States, including by bypassing judicial hearings. This paper argues that the rule of law must be restored to the US removal adjudication system, and it proposes ways in which this can be accomplished. Specific recommendations include the necessity of clear enforcement priorities, sufficient resources to allow for fair adjudication, a statute of limitations for immigration violations, and the right to counsel.
This paper outlines the complexities — and unlikelihood — of keeping families together when facing, or in the aftermath of deportation. After discussing the context that prevents reunification among immigrant families more generally, I outline several of the particular ways that families are divided when a member is deported. Drawing on case studies from longitudinal ethnographic research in Mexico and the United States, I describe: 1 the difficulties in successfully canceling deportation orders, 2 the particular limitations to family reunification for US citizen children when a parent is deported, and 3 the legal barriers to authorized return to the United States after deportation.
I argue that without comprehensive immigration reform and concrete possibilities for relief, mixed-status and transnational families will continue to be divided. Existing laws do not adequately address family life and the diverse needs of individuals as members of families, creating a humanitarian crisis both within and beyond the borders of the United States.

The paper concludes with recommendations for immigration policy reform and suggestions for restructuring administrative processes that directly impact those who have been deported and their family membersWeak borders allow terrorists and smugglers, as well as millions of illegal aliens, easy entrance to the United States. Now, the number of National Guard troops helping as part of Operation Jump Start is being cut in half and by September 1st only 3, troops will still be in place.
Since Operation Jump Start began, fewer illegal immigrants are crossing our southern border. Marijuana, cocaine, and heroin seizures have increased—a reminder that better border security is an essential part of drug interdiction. Tightening control of our southern border may also be a factor in the lack of additional terrorist attacks in the United States since September 11, While the drawdown of the National Guard troops participating in Operation Jump Start was scheduled since the beginning of the operation, the troops were supposed to be replaced by 6, new U.
Customs and Border Protection agents. These replacements, called for by President Bush, would increase the total number of agents from 12, to 18, However, recruitment has been slow and continuing with the planned withdrawal of the National Guard is significantly reducing manpower on the border. We need to advance it, not retreat from it. The President got the message and last week announced a new set of initiatives to combat illegal immigration. Having failed for years to solve our illegal immigration problem and protect our borders, however, Congress and the President need to keep the National Guard in place until we meet the goal of 18, border agents.
